En hiver, une bonne partie de la Norvège se transforme en merveilleuse carte postale toute blanche. C’est le moment idéal pour profiter des paysages enneigés, tant notre amour de la neige est grand. Le ski occupe une place privilégiée dans la culture et dans l’histoire norvégiennes. En hiver, les Norvégiens de tous âges se répandent dans les stations de sports d’hiver, les forêts et les montagnes pour en arpenter les descentes et pistes damées.
En hiver, il n’y a pas que le ski ! Il y aussi la luge, la raquette à neige, le traîneau à chiens et les sorties en mer d’observation des baleines. À moins que vous ne vous laissiez tenter par une paisible croisière sur un fjord pour admirer la vue des sommets enneigés s’y reflétant.
L’hiver, c’est également la période idéale pour effectuer certains des plus beaux trajets en train du monde, en toute quiétude. Enfin, en novembre et en décembre, de charmants marchés de Noël fleurissent sur tout le territoire.
Les aurores boréales
Les nuits d'hiver sont longues dans l’ensemble de la Norvège. Dans la quasi-totalité de la Norvège du Nord, de mi-novembre à fin janvier, le soleil ne se lève pas du tout, si ce n’est pour de brèves apparitions au-dessus de la ligne d'horizon. Toutefois, ce n’est pas l’obscurité totale du matin au soir, et la neige baigne le paysage dans une lumière pleine de poésie. Par temps clair, surtout dans le sud de cette région, il peut faire jour plusieurs heures et l’on peut voir de très belles couleurs au coucher du soleil, tandis que le ciel, au nord, vire au bleu foncé.

Avec de la chance, des aurores boréales entameront leur ballet dans le ciel ! Elles se produisent le plus fréquemment dans le Nord, mais en de rares occasions, il arrive qu’on puisse les voir partout dans le pays. La période s’étendant d’octobre à mars est la plus propice à l’observation de ce phénomène extraordinaire.
En Norvège du Sud, pendant les mois d’hiver, on peut avoir de six à huit heures de clarté par jour.

Climat hivernal
Dans ce pays tout en longueur, le climat varie grandement d’une région à l'autre. Sur le littoral, les températures stagnent généralement autour de 0 °C. À l’intérieur des terres, les températures sont généralement plus basses et descendent jusqu’à −10 °C, voire −20 °C. Dans certains endroits, elles peuvent même atteindre un glacial −40 °C.
Comment se vêtir pour l'hiver
Les hivers en Norvège peuvent être très froids, même si de temps en temps, ils sont doux. Votre tenue vestimentaire pour vos activités de plein air dépendra donc de la nature de ces dernières et de l’endroit où vous les pratiquez.
Habillez-vous chaudement et superposez plusieurs couches de vêtements. Préférez la laine au coton ou au polyester et veillez à bien vous protéger de l’humidité et du vent. Une veste imperméable coupe-vent sera la bienvenue dans les régions côtières, sujettes à la pluie. Si vous n’envisagez pas d’être très actifs, une épaisse veste en duvet et un pantalon de ski, associés à des sous-vêtements thermiques vous garderont bien au chaud.
Sachez aussi que le froid ressenti sera beaucoup plus intense que la température affichée, selon le facteur de refroidissement dû au vent. Celui-ci s’accentue avec la force du vent.
N’oubliez pas que l’hiver est la meilleure saison de l’année pour vous initier au noble art du kos, à grand renfort de bougies et de feu crépitant dans la cheminée. Sans omettre un bon sauna fumant, jamais bien loin !
Restauration de saison
Les poissons et fruits de mer atteignent leur pic gustatif en hiver. La fin du mois de janvier marque également le début de la saison du skrei, ce cabillaud arctique qui migre de la mer de Barents pour frayer dans les eaux plus chaudes des Lofoten et des Vesterålen.
Poisson, mouton, porc ou cerf sont appréciés dans la cuisine de Noël et se retrouvent à la carte de nombreux restaurants à l’approche de la saison festive. Si vous avez l’esprit téméraire, vous pourriez déguster quelques plats traditionnels norvégiens, comme le smalahove (tête de mouton), le lutefisk (stockfisch ayant trempé dans une solution à base de soude) et les pinnekjøtt (côtelettes de mouton séchées, salées et cuites à la vapeur). Mais ne vous inquiétez pas, les supermarchés ont en rayon toutes sortes de produits étrangers et il y a des restaurants pour tous les goûts.
