Mari Boine
A powerful voice from Sápmi. Mari Boine is a cultural icon. Ever since the albums Jaskatvuođa maŋŋá in 1985 and Gula Gula in 1989, she has been an important voice for Sámi culture. The songs in her native language have resonated internationally, and Boine has experimented with genre-blending and various artist collaborations – such as with Peter Gabriel, and with Jan Garbarek – throughout her career. – My songs describe the pain of oppression and the struggle to reclaim self-respect, but I also sing about the joy of growing up within a culture that has such a close bond with nature, says Boine. In recent years, Boine has been rediscovered by new audiences following her participation in the Norwegian TV show Hver gang vi møtes, where she interpreted songs by Norwegian musicians in Vamp, Highasakite and Matoma with her powerful voice and strong stage presence. The newspaper VG wrote: ‘Mari Boine is one of our leading musical alchemists, with enviable control.’ On the 2024 album Alva, Boine confronted her strict, religious upbringing. Critics expressed that the tone and message seemed closer to the well-known songs from the beginning of her career. Christian Grøvlen
An evening for piano lovers. Pianist and composer Christian Grøvlen was born and raised at Kronstad, Bergen, and already has a long and eventful concert career. In recent years, he has served as director of the Composer's Homes at KODE. Even though he's surrounded by the legacy of Grieg, Bull, and Sæverud, Grøvlen has also brought lesser-known voices from Norway's cultural heritage into the spotlight. For this evening in Håkonshallen, Grøvlen has selected four composers and works that hold deep personal meaning for him: Weber, with his romantic and forward-looking Sonata No. 2; and Chopin, with a work written in ardent admiration of Weber’s music. The program also features Agathe Backer Grøndahl’s mystical I blaafjellet. Grøndahl’s music tends toward late Romanticism and Impressionism, with hints of folk music influenced by Bartók. Grøvlen has a special affection for Backer Grøndahl’s music and has played a key role in bringing her work out into the world. The final piece of the evening is a passionate and tempestuous work: Sergei Rachmaninov's Piano Sonata No. 2. - Bergen29.05.2026
Hagenkvartetten
One last time. 'When I listen to a string quartet, it feels as if I am eavesdropping on a conversation between four intelligent people,' wrote Goethe in 1829. In Håkonshallen, one of the most legendary quartets of our time takes the stage. Formed in 1981 by siblings Lukas, Veronika, Clemens and Angelika Hagen, the quartet quickly established itself at the very highest international level. In a shifting world full of turmoil and uncertainty, the Hagen Quartet has been a constant presence. They have, in a way, always been here – through cold and hot wars, the fall of the Soviet Union, the arrival of the internet, four popes and a pandemic. They are now on their farewell tour, and in Bergen you have an exclusive opportunity to experience the quartet one last time. On this evening they perform some of the true treasures of the quartet repertoire, works that have stood the test of time: Beethoven’s Quartet No. 16, Haydn’s Quartet No. 54, and Schubert’s Quartet No. 14. Israel & Mohamed
Fatherhood and art in uplifting cross-cultural dialogue. French theatre-maker Mohamed El Khatib returns to the Bergen International Festival after last year’s The secret life of old people and A beautiful ending. El Khatib is back with a collaboration with Spanish flamenco artist Israel Galván. This co-created work brings together their two journeys, two life stories elegantly woven together in a contemplation of art, life and inheritance. El Khatib and Galván converse on stage – only this is a conversation where sometimes only dance and movement are needed. Past and present come together as both men enter a conversation with each other and their fathers that is both intimate and political. Drawing on film, dance, music, performance and even a little bit of football, both men navigate their shared history with a profound sense of their heritage. The resulting “documentary dance” is an uplifting dialogue across the Mediterranean, a portrait of two artists exploring the phenomenon of fatherhood with humour, respect and compassion. “To the right of the stage, the rebellious flamenco virtuoso, Israel Galván, dressed in a long blue djellaba. To the left, the writer-director Mohamed El Khatib, in football shorts and flamenco shoes. With a touch of humor, the two artists present their intertwined portraits, through their relationship with their fathers, two men of the older generation who raised them with a firm hand.” – La Provence Image at top: Israel Galván and Mohamed El Khatib. Il Cimento dell'Armonia e dell'Inventione
Vivaldi’s masterpiece reimagined in dance. Celebrated choreographer Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker and Radouan Mriziga's lauded take on Vivaldi’s Four Seasons comes to Bergen in a live version with Amandine Beyer, the violinist who inspired it. 300 years ago in Venice, Antonio Vivaldi wrote one of history’s most iconic pieces of music. His set of violin concertos known as The Four Seasons was one of the first musical works to attempt to describe phenomena with which humans are all familiar – the changes in climate through the course of a year. Over three centuries, Vivaldi’s Four Seasons has inspired countless artists, musicians and listeners. But violinist Amandine Beyer’s acclaimed recording of the work had a particular effect on Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker, the radical dancer-choreographer known for her exactingly rhythmical work. Together, De Keersmaeker and choreographer Radouan Mriziga created Il Cimento dell'Armonia e dell'Inventione – a danced response to Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, taking its name from the title of the composer’s original publication. Premiered in 2024, the piece was described by the Financial Times as ‘90 minutes of carefully constructed dance geometry, at once nonchalant and cerebral.’ For this version, the dancers of De Keersmaeker’s company Rosas will move to a live performance of Vivaldi’s seasons from Beyer and her ensemble Gli Incogniti, whose recording of the music made such an impact. Il Cimento dell'Armonia e dell'Inventione promises to reawaken our engagement with a masterpiece of the baroque and offer a deeply human, physical response to the power of Vivaldi’s music – all in an age when climate change threatens the very idea of four seasons itself. You'll see them wearing special red or blu overalls and generally being a lively addition to the parades and festivities. The Morning parade: Starts at Dreggen at 07:00 The first parade takes place already at 7:00 from Dreggen, with a salute, our national anthem and of course the Bergen song. The Morning parade ends with a speech at the Festival Square. The main parade: Departure from Koengen approx at 10:30 As the name says, the main parade is one of the biggest events on 17th of May. It involves the city's "associations, corporations and government agencies." The parade ends at Festplassen Square. The Flag parade: Starts at the Festplassen Square at 10:40 The Flag parade starts from different schools and march to the gathering at Festival Square. The route goes through the center and pass the main parade and ends at Torgalmenningen. The Flag parade is the children's parade! The parade ends at Koengen. Fireworks round off the day at Festplassen at 23:15 Please note that the whole city center will be closed for ordinary traffic during the celebrations and public transport will have special routes and stops. The Bergen Light Rail to and from the airport will not stop at the two last stops in the city center (Nonneseter and Byparken) in the morning until 15:00 in the afternoon. Bergen Buss station is then the last stop in the city center. If you are going from the city center to the airport on the 17th May, we recommend you plan your means of transport well in advance. - RéserverBergen22.05.2026 - 23.05.2026

Lise Davidsen with James Baillieu
Soul-searching with Schubert. This is an evening where everything is laid bare. No emotion is too small, nor too big. In other words: it is time for Franz Schubert. The Austrian composer lived only 31 years, yet he managed to leave behind more than 600 songs before his death in 1828. “There is a divine spark in him,” said Ludwig van Beethoven of Schubert. His music is imbued with longing, despair, and helplessness. And yet, beneath it all sings love - impossible love, and possible love. This is part of Schubert’s brilliance: the way he reveals the ambiguity in every question and every life choice, letting longing, hope, and love reflect and refract through one another. And the voice of love this evening is that of Lise Davidsen. Together with pianist James Baillieu, she delves into some of Schubert’s most introspective and emotionally profound songs. The world-renowned soprano was named Festival musician at the 2023 Bergen International Festival, where she captivated audiences in the title role of the opening production, Tosca. ‘Davidsen sings with painful and heart-wrenching intensity about how young love is, in an instant, transformed into all-consuming tragedy,’ wrote Aftenposten when the duo appeared at the Festival in 2023. Dirigentmesterklasse m/Esa-Pekka Salonen
Turangalîla – a modern masterpiece of joy and love. The New York Times describes Esa-Pekka Salonen as a conductor at the pinnacle of his career, capable of doing anything, anywhere. Now, he comes to Bergen to conduct the Festival’s opening concert, featuring Olivier Messiaen’s Turangalîla-Symphonie and Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. ‘Esa-Pekka Salonen has been a superstar on the classical music scene for decades, with a deep and lasting influence as both composer and conductor,’ says Festival Director Lars Petter Hagen. Salonen is celebrated for his profound musical insight and for bringing out the very best in the orchestras he collaborates with, including the Philharmonia Orchestra in London, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the San Francisco Symphony. ‘He is passionately committed to classical music’s role in society - how it can evolve, be renewed, and reach new audiences. A thinker, a visionary and a musical powerhouse of our time,’ Hagen adds. Salonen has lived with Turangalîla since he first encountered it as a child in Finland. The French composer Olivier Messiaen composed the work in 1948 as a tribute to life, joy, and love, drawing inspiration from the medieval tale of Tristan and Isolde. The title Turangalîla is a blend of Sanskrit words: Lîla means both play and love, but also suggests a sense of divine intervention in the universe. Turanga stands for movement and rhythm, but also the passage of time. Messiaen wrote that Turangalîla means everything at once: a love song, a hymn to joy, time, movement, rhythm, life and death. The colours, textures, rhythms, melodies and surprises of Turangalîla unfold with every phrase. Across ten movements, the piece breaks many of the conventions typically associated with the symphonic form. The concert features two solo instruments: the piano, and the distinctive ondes Martenot, an early electronic keyboard instrument invented in 1928. More than 100 musicians will take to the stage for this spectacular musical experience. Image on top: Esa-Pekka Salonen. Photo: Mika Ranta - Bergen28.05.2026 - 05.06.2026
Night Jazz
Nattjazz (Nightjazz) is the longest jazz festival in Northern Europe and is arranged annually in late May / early June in Bergen. Nattjazz was founded in 1972 and is despite its age, now stronger than ever. Every year approximately 80 concerts are presented throughout the festival period. The main festival area is an old sardine factory, USF Verftet (United Sardines Factory), which now contains several concert venues plus exhibitions, theatre, cinema and artist studios. The music profile of Nattjazz spans through a wide range of styles, with a main focus on modern jazz. During Nattjazz the borderlines between jazz, rock, ethno and electronica are explored and often wiped out. The children also get their share!
