In 2025, the follow-up Mirra was released – this time with the wild reindeer near Maurseth’s home region by Hardangervidda taking the solo role.

Bach never expected his music to outlive him. But when it came to his musical setting of the story of Christ’s arrest and execution, the St Matthew Passion, he took steps to ensure the music would last. First, he made a pristine copy of the score in ink and repaired it as he grew old. Second, he went to extraordinary lengths to make this score speak beyond its time, its place and even its religion - to connect with anyone of any age in any time. Many believe the music of the St Matthew Passion has never been surpassed. Either way, its vivid storytelling, layers of musical beauty and spiritual power have maintained an urgent and transfixing power. Artistic Partner Jan Villem de Vriend returns to Bergen to conduct this monument of western civilization - a work that sings with divinity and speaks with humanity, and challenges a community of listeners to embark on a spiritual journey that rewards openness and concentration. One musical depiction of Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers towers above them all. When Serge Prokofiev’s ballet score was first heard in 1940, audiences can’t have been in any doubt as to the characters and events the composer was describing. His score is one of the most remarkable renderings of character, mood and circumstance in musical history - its iconic Dance of the Knights depicting a stand-off between the Montagues and the Capulets with ground-shaking brilliance. Before excerpts from Prokofiev’s story in music, Honorary Conductor Edward Gardner conducts pieces of contemporary music that will feel very close to home. Ketil Hvoslef’s The Godfather salutes the composer’s own godfather, Harald Heide, who conducted the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra for over 40 years. After that, international star and local treasure Leif Ove Andsnes takes to the piano stool for a major premiere: a new Piano Concerto from our composer-in-residence, Ørjan Matre.

Fra øyeblikket kveldens finske Dima Slobodeniouk løfter dirigentpinnen til han legger den fra seg, har publikum fått oppleve et fyrverkeri av en konsert pakket med energi, driv, humor, virtuositet og det hjerteskjærende vakre. Kveldens konsert innledes med et fargerikt og eksplosivt orkestralt utbrudd i John Adams’ verk Slonimsky’s Earbox fra 1995. Adams er inspirert av den gnistrende åpningen i Stravinskys symfoniske dikt Le chant du Rossignol. Slonimsky i tittelen viser til russeren Nicholas Slonimsky, som skrev en rekke bøker om musikk, deriblant The Thesaurus of Scales and Melodic Patterns, som har hatt stor betydning for Adams. Dmitri Sjostakovitsj var bare 21 år gammel da han skrev sin første av to pianokonserter. Den første, fra 1927, er et fantastisk eksempel på en ungdommelig sammensmelting av hans uutgrunnelige humor, hans seriøse fokus på å komponere virtuos musikk og ulike stilarter. Mellom to livlige og humørfylte satser har komponisten plassert en hjerteskjærende vakker sakte sats. Sjostakovitsj skrev konserten som en fødselsdagspresang for sin sønn Maxim. Symfoni i tre satser var det første verket Stravinsky komponerte etter at han ble amerikansk statsborger i 1945. I musikken kan vi gjenkjenne elementer fra hans andre komposisjoner, som pianokonserten, musikken til Hollywoodfilmen Sangen om Bernadette og Vårofferet. Selv kalte Stravinsky verket sin krigssymfoni siden den var påbegynt under andre verdenskrig, noe som kan forklare den store dynamikken i verket. Kveldens pianosolist er italienske Federico Colli, som av International Piano Magazine tidligere ble omtalt som en av 30 pianister under 30 år som trolig ville dominere på verdens scener i årene framover. Solist på trompet er britiske Matilda Lloyd som denne sesongen har status som European Concert Halls Organisation (ECHO) Rising Star, noe som gir henne anledning til å spille i prestisjetunge konserthus som Concertgebouw, Musikverein i Wien og Elbphilharmonie i Hamburg. Carl Nielsen filled his music with the unstoppable energies of life itself, until the First World War began to tear Europe apart. In his Symphony No. 4 from 1916, which launches with an orchestral eruption akin to a violently bursting volcano, the composer’s characteristic musical energy comes close to being smothered. In the end, the life force that seems to propel so much of Nielsen’s music forward proves utterly ‘Inextinguishable’. The talented young musicians of the Bergen Philharmonic Youth Orchestra set their skills towards this most bracing of Nordic symphonies, after the young Danish bassoonist Bjarke Scousboe plays the sprightly concerto Mozart wrote for the instrument when he was just 18 years old. In 2011, a 32-year-old Ørjan Matre wrote a spectacular new work for the opening of the new concert hall in Kristiansand, Kilden. Resurgence is an immersive, surround-sound work in which every audience member hears the music differently - a spectacular opening for what promises to be an invigorating concert under Antony Hermus. Espen Lind is finally back with the songs we all know! One of Norway’s most respected artists takes the stage with a full band, offering an evening filled with familiar hits, fresh interpretations from Hver gang vi møtes, engaging stories, and top-tier musicianship. With a career that also includes songwriting for stars like Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, and Train, Espen Lind cements his position as one of the most complete musicians of our time. Espen Lind rose to fame in the late 1990s with When Susannah Cries and has since become one of Norway’s most beloved and versatile artists. He has written international hits for artists including Beyoncé and Train, and has been behind some of Norway’s most successful releases as a songwriter and producer. In addition to his solo career, he has been part of the hugely successful Lind, Nilsen, Fuentes, Holm, and has served as a mentor on The Voice for many years. In 2025, he composed the original music for NRK’s Rekviem for Selina, and in 2024 he played Pontius Pilatus in Jesus Christ Superstar at Folketeateret. Espen Lind is an ever-evolving artist, with a career that spans both intimate and global musical landscapes.
Bergen01.02.2026 - 05.04.2026Exhibition: "Iter Subterraneum"
"Iter Subterraneum" is a group exhibition inspired by Ludvig Holberg's novel Niels Klim's Underground Travels (1741) is often cited as the Nordic region's first science fiction novel. The story follows a man who falls through a hole in the earth beneath Bergen and discovers a society governed by sentient trees. Here, the Enlightenment's faith in reason and progress is united with fantasy, satire, and speculative thought. In Holberg's subterranean universe, the trees possess both morality and rationality. Today, the novel can be read as an early reflection on ecology and utopian thinking, where branching and coexistence challenge humanity's notion of superiority. The exhibition takes its name from Holberg's original Latin title for the book, and refers to a journey unfolding underground, in spaces often associated with the hidden, the overlooked, and the unconscious. "Iter Subterraneum" re-reads Holberg's underground journey with a gaze directed towards the plant world. Here, the sentient trees become an image of other forms of sensing and reasoning—ways of perceiving and organising the world that do not regard the human as a central unit against which everything is measured. The subterranean and utopian landscapes open up as speculative spaces for thinking with nature rather than about it. In Galleries 1–4, works by ten artists from diverse geographical and linguistic contexts are presented. In various ways, they investigate connections between nature and technology, mythology and science, and the body and material. Several of the artists turn their gaze away from the human and towards life forms, narratives, and experiences that typically reside on the margins. As in Holberg's book, several of the works contain both a belief in the possibilities of knowledge and a fundamental doubt about humanity's place in the natural order. Through sculpture, film, painting, collage, and performance, the artists open up speculative spaces where plants, fungi, insects, and human bodies enter into shifting relationships. The exhibition approaches utopian thinking not as an endpoint but as a movement—a way of orienting oneself in encounters with nature, knowledge, and imagination. Gallery 5 expands "Iter Subterraneum" with a historical and literary perspective. A selection of historical editions of Niels Klim's Underground Travels are presented in collaboration with the Special Collections at the University of Bergen Library, ranging from the original Latin edition Nicolai Klimii Iter Subterraneum (1741) to later translations in Danish, Norwegian, and other languages. Together with illustrations, graphic interpretations, and later artistic adaptations, the selection offers insight into how Holberg's underground journey has been read and carried forward over time.

S'y rendre en voiture
Si vous venez d’Oslo, vous pouvez passer par le plateau montagneux du Hardangervidda, les montagnes de Haukeli ou Hemsedalsfjellet (7 - 8,5 heures).
Si vous venez du sud ou du nord, suivez la côte et traversez les fjords par le ferry ou par les ponts. Sachez qu’il y a souvent la queue pour le ferry en été et qu’il est recommandé d’arriver tôt.
