But I felt myself that there was a power in these old songs, a power that did not leave me unaffected. And now I have not played them for a long time. And never before have we performed the entire record. But we are doing something about that this year: On the autumn church tour we will simply play the entire record. Live. Maria is an artist, a songwriter with a completely distinctive voice — she is also a storyteller and a performer of the rarest kind. Since then she has travelled the world with her music. The sound of the hardanger fiddle, with its distinctive tuning and resonating overtones, connects Norway to its deepest musical traditions while channeling centuries of joy and sorrow, patience and fortitude. A brand-new piece by our Composer-in-Residence Ørjan Matre combines the evocative sounds of the hardanger fiddle with the refined world of the classical violin. To play it, we welcome a musician who excels on both instruments and even managed to win Norway the Eurovision Song Contest on her hardanger fiddle in 2009 – Ragnhild Hemsing. After the new concerto and two hypnotic excerpts from Matre’s own reworking of Edvard Grieg’s Lyric Pieces, Nicholas Collon conducts a symphony by Shostakovich that has been likened to ‘a film score without a film.’ In his arresting Symphony No 11, Shostakovich depicted the failed uprising of 1905, a pre-cursor to the Russian Revolution of 12 years later. As the great cellist Mstislav Rostropovich observed, this intensely-felt piece bears witness not just to the events of 1905, but to the tragically persistent patterns of suppression and violence in human history.

As long as there have been composers, there have been remixes of their music. When Max Richter ‘recomposed’ Antonio Vivaldi’s violin concertos known as The Four Seasons in 2012, he was joining a long line of musicians who have put their own slant on works by others – mostly driven by a sincere love for the original. In this concert uniting the talents of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Edvard Grieg Vocal Ensemble and Youth Choir, Rasmus Hella Mikkelsen takes Richter’s ambient expansion of Vivaldi’s seasons as a starting point for an evening of music echoing across the centuries. Included is the baroque-style simplicity of Mozart’s ‘canon’ for four voices Nascoso è il mio sol and the vibrant, joyous brilliance of the same composer’s penultimate symphony. Opening the concert is choral music that appears to unite ancient and modern with uncanny brilliance – Morten Lauridsen’s O Magnum Mysterium for unaccompanied choir, in which combines the austerity of Gregorian Chant with the shimmering harmonic richness of modern American choral music.

Perfect Sounds Forever presenterer: Les Imprimés Landmark / 15.oktober / 20.00: dører / 21.00: konsertstart Morten Martens has been living with music for most of his life, even when his name wasn't attached to it. For more than 20 years, the Norwegian producer worked quietly behind the scenes, shaping other people's records, studying sound with the utmost reverence to form and craft. So it's no surprise then that his work as Les Imprimés feels realized, the result of a sonic devotion dedicated to '50s doo-wop, easy listening, '60s and '70s soul, the soft, velvety textures of the '80s, and the alt-rock aesthetics of the '90s and '00s. There's hip-hop in its DNA, too, emerging through airy rhythm, natural imperfections, and a soothing aura. In turn, Martens' new album as Les Imprimés, Fading Forward, feels like a reckoning: a sun-soaked LP that carries the weight of years spent absorbing groove, melody and emotional truth, honest and efficient, gathered without preconceptions of genre. Deliberately untethered to time, Martens blends his influences into art that feels lived-in, nostalgic but not overly so — still very much now while acknowledging then. Martens records with restraint, handling nearly all the playing himself, leaning upon old studio practices where consistency created cohesion. You hear it in the way the album moves through a single melodic thought rather than a playlist. Equally warm, analog and human, nothing feels rushed or decorative. Like many listeners of his generation, Martens found his way backward through samples, by tracing rap records to the old gospel, soul, jazz and funk vinyl that once filled his childhood home. That sense of return saturates Fading Forward, an intentional record about the complexities of life and the lessons learned from it. "It's a bit about going into the future and leaving something behind in a way," he says. On purpose, the album has darkness hidden within its bright hue, and it's not until you listen to the lyrics that you discover how deep it goes. Case in point, the opening chords of "Greatest Mistake" rise slowly to the fore, conjuring the type of old soul you play when clouds hover low. Dig into the theme and you realize this: He's encouraging listeners to move beyond traumas of the past. Another song, "Close My Eyes," uses galloping drums and wafting guitar to convey something danceable. But the words speak to the notion of trying to appease unhappy people: it won't work no matter how hard you push, and sometimes you're the problem. The song doesn't just point the f inger, Martens takes responsibility for being unreachable emotionally. "Maybe I never let you in, my closet full of skeletons," he ponders. "I expect you to understand the way I am." Yet the album isn't overtly bleak. Other tracks like "You and I" and "Get Lost" tap into the togetherness one can extract from human partnership and connection to nature. The former frames romance as survival, a portrait of two people navigating life's endless obstacles and choosing each other repeatedly. While the latter partially captures the mental weight of small-town isolation and the desire to sink into geography, it's also about escaping one's reality. "Paradise," the album's concluding track, drifts through a gentle calm — emulating '50s Hawaiian soul — as it wrestles with grief. "I like the contrast between happy and sad. The music is very beautiful and nice, and the lyrics are maybe not." Martens explains. That juxtaposition defines much of the album's emotional power, and in the end, Fading Forward speaks to both the LP's emotional arc and Martens' personal transition. Though Les Imprimés is still relatively new territory, this well-deserved spotlight is a thrilling shift from anonymity to vulnerability. But the music never sounds unsure. Instead, it moves with patience and clarity, guided by taste, experience and trust in feeling. Fading Forward isn't about reinvention so much as arrival; it's the vibration of an artist finally allowing himself to be heard.

Take a quarter of an hour and join us for a focused art experience, where one artwork and one theme take centre stage. "Kvinneakt" by Jean Heiberg was painted in 1912. Although Heiberg created several nude paintings, this is his most well-known. He studied under the renowned master Henri Matisse in Paris. Like his teacher, Heiberg emphasised the decorative qualities of his subjects by simplifying them into flat areas of colour separated by bold contour lines. In this 15-minute art talk, we will take a closer look at how, with this painting from the Rasmus Meyer Collection, Heiberg breaks away from the long-standing tradition of the nude in Western art. The entire building fills with life when some of Norway's most exciting contemporary ensembles invite you to a promenade concert in Nykirken! Stemmeklang performs the work DE PROFUNDIS by Tyler Futrell together with NyNorsk messingkvintett, and the work OSEAN together with Parallax. Parallax and Anders Hannevold give the world premiere of the new work SERAF for guitar, percussion, trumpet, loose organ pipes and organetto portativo. Stemmeklang is a vocal quintet that works with space, sound and acoustics, with music that is in the borderland between contemporary music, improvisation and sonic exploration. The musical moves between voices, sounds, sonic textures and the room's own resonance, where architecture, history and acoustics become an active part of the experience. Anders Hannevold is interested in how we as individuals assign meaning to art, and uses this as a starting point in his compositions. Hannevold combines different types of notation – such as graphic scores, instruction texts and extended notation systems – and adapts the expression to each work. S’y rendre en avion
L’aéroport de Bergen fait office d'aéroport régional pour une bonne partie de la Norvège des Fjords. Il existe des liaisons directes à destination de Bergen depuis de nombreuses villes à l’étranger et depuis toutes les grandes villes de Norvège.
Depuis l’aéroport, les navettes et le Bybanen vous amènent au centre de Bergen en une demi-heure environ.

S’y rendre par le bateau
Un ferry assure la liaison de Hirtshals au Danemark à Bergen.
Il est aussi possible de prendre un ferry de Stavanger à Bergen.
Bergen est enfin un port d’escale pour l’express côtier Hurtigruten, qui navigue jusqu’à Kirkenes, tout au nord, près de la frontière russe.
S’y rendre par le train
La ligne de Bergen, reliant Oslo et Bergen, est connue dans le monde entier pour la beauté de son trajet. Plusieurs liaisons quotidiennes sont assurées et le trajet prend environ sept heures.

Des bus express assurent un certain nombre de trajets quotidiens entre les principales grandes villes norvégiennes.
S'y rendre en voiture
Si vous venez d’Oslo, vous pouvez passer par le plateau montagneux du Hardangervidda, les montagnes de Haukeli ou Hemsedalsfjellet (7 - 8,5 heures).
Si vous venez du sud ou du nord, suivez la côte et traversez les fjords par le ferry ou par les ponts. Sachez qu’il y a souvent la queue pour le ferry en été et qu’il est recommandé d’arriver tôt.
