Sorties d’approche des élans en Norvège
Êtes-vous déjà allé au « pays des élans » ? L'élan est l'un des plus célèbres habitants de la Norvège. On le trouve dans presque tout le pays.
Observer de près ces grands cervidés aux bois majestueux est une expérience inoubliable. Lors d'une sortie d'approche des élans, des guides locaux vous aideront à trouver votre chemin dans les vastes forêts et à augmenter vos chances de voir des élans dans leur habitat naturel.
Important : Comme pour tout animal sauvage, nous devons respecter les élans et toujours garder de bonnes distances de sécurité. Rappelez-vous qu’ils sont plus rapides que nous, humains, et peuvent faire du mal s'ils sont apeurés, surpris ou s'ils défendent leurs petits.
Magie des élans sur « l’Île de conte de fées »
La population d’élans a augmenté en Norvège et, au fil des ans, les animaux ont trouvé leurs territoires préférés. L’un de ces territoires est constitué par les Vesterålen en Norvège du Nord, où les élans se sont établis depuis de longues années.
Jens et Marius Birkeland travaillent pour Vesterålen Tours. Ils organisent des sorties d’approche des élans sur l’île d’Andøya et d'autres îles des Vesterålen. Après plusieurs rencontres magiques avec le roi de la forêt, ils ont même donné un surnom à Andøya.
« Nous l’avons surnommée L’Île de conte de fées », disent les deux frères.
Et alors que nous nous lançons sur la piste des élans dans le véhicule tout terrain, nous avons en effet l’impression de traverser un décor de conte de fées : hautes montagnes et forêts épaisses d'un côté, mer de l’autre.
« Je ne pense pas qu'il y ait d'autres endroits comme celui-ci. Il suffit de monter en voiture et on les rencontre très vite. »

Les sorties d’observation des élans en Norvège se font souvent en voiture. Les paysages dégagés d’Andøya conviennent bien à ce type d’excursions. Ils sont parfaits pour voir les élans.
On dirait qu'il y a un élan dans le jardin...
Ce qui est incroyable, avec les élans, c’est qu’ils peuvent surgir n’importe où. Cela peut donner lieu à des situations dangereuses, mais aussi à des moments drôles.
« On peut en voir un dans un jardin ou en pleine nature. La nuit, on peut en croiser en pleine ville, et au bord de la mer, on peut en voir se baigner », explique Jens.
Et il arrive qu'un élan traverse la route. Le principal danger, c’est qu'il traverse directement devant vous, ne vous laissant pas le temps de réagir. C’est pourquoi il est très important de rouler prudemment dans les zones où ils sont nombreux.
Voir un élan sous une aurore boréale
Vous aimez les animaux sauvages et êtes fasciné par les aurores boréales ? Alors que diriez-vous d’une sortie nocturne d’approche des élans... sous une aurore boréale ?
La Norvège est l’un des plus jolis et plus intéressants pays du monde pour voir une aurore boréale. Or, les Vesterålen se situent juste sous l’ovale auroral, là où l'activité est à son plus fort.
« C’est vraiment exceptionnel. Vous avez la neige, vous avez les élans, vous avez les montagnes et les aurores boréales, tout en même temps », indique Marius.
Un élan, c’est déjà magnifique à contempler, mais sous une aurore boréale ou le soleil de minuit, c’est magique !
Quelle est la meilleure saison ?
Chaque saison est intéressante à sa façon.
Selon Jens et Marius, la meilleure période pour une sortie d’approche des élans est août, septembre et octobre, soit la saison du rut. C’est le moment où l’on peut voir les mâles les plus impressionnants, avec des bois entièrement développés, dans les belles couleurs de l'automne.
« Ensuite, il y a l’été, qui est sans doute ma saison préférée, en raison de toutes les naissances », remarque Marius.
Il faut constamment observer une bonne distance de sécurité, mais à la saison des mises bas, il faut redoubler de vigilance. Il ne faut surtout pas s’interposer entre une mère et son petit, la mère étant très protectrice et agressive.
Trouver une sortie d’observation des élans
Les Vesterålen sont le seul endroit où l’on peut voir l’élan norvégien. Que vous souhaitiez vivre votre expérience en voiture, en vélo électrique, à pied ou depuis un affût, vous trouverez des prestataires pour vous accompagner partout en Norvège.
Gardez bien à l’esprit que les élans sont des animaux sauvages, et donc farouches, et qu'il est impossible de prédire le déroulement d’une sortie, chaque jour étant unique.

Si vous voyez un élan et avez votre caméra à portée de main, vous saisirez probablement l’instant. Rappelez-vous de ne pas vous approcher de l’animal. Si vous êtes en voiture, restez près de votre véhicule pendant la prise de vue. Vous obtiendrez quand même de superbes clichés ! Voici cinq conseils pour améliorer vos photos animalières :
Conseils pour la photographie animalière
• Superposer des vêtements : mettre plusieurs couches de vêtements quand on crapahute dans la nature, quelle que soit la saison, mais plus particulièrement en hiver.
• Connaître l'animal : il s'agit de capturer les moments furtifs. Pour cela, il est bon de pouvoir anticiper les mouvements du sujet.
• Tenir compte du vent : les élans se couchent habituellement avec le vent derrière eux, et le nez au vent.
• Préparer votre appareil : utiliser un zoom pour de bonnes images ! Ne vous approchez pas de ce gros animal, potentiellement dangereux.
• Être patient : n’abandonnez pas. Les meilleures photos prennent du temps !
Faune sauvage des Vesterålen
La région des Vesterålen abrite une abondante faune sauvage. Vous pouvez participer à des excursions guidées pour observer les aigles, les rennes, les renards, les loutres et les chouettes, pour ne nommer que quelques animaux.
C’est aussi le royaume des baleines en Norvège. Les cachalots, qui peuvent atteindre jusqu'à 20 mètres de long, peuvent être observés sur la côte des Vesterålen toute l’année. C’est donc la région de Norvège la plus propice à l’observation des baleines !
En été, l’île de Bleiksøya, au large d’Andøya, devient un sanctuaire ornithologique débordant de vie, avec l’une des plus grandes colonies de macareux de Norvège !
