Observer les baleines en Norvège
Les côtes norvégiennes abritent ces majestueux cétacés qui fascinent tant touristes et habitants. On peut apercevoir des cachalots, dont la taille peut atteindre jusqu'à 20 mètres, dans l’archipel des Vesterålen tout au long de l'année.
Debout sur le pont, on sent l’air frais de l’océan emplir ses poumons tandis que le quai d’Andenes s'éloigne peu à peu. Nul ne sait ce que la journée apportera. Comme pour toute excursion d’observation de la faune sauvage, ce sont les animaux qui décident. Néanmoins, dans l’archipel des Vesterålen, vos chances d'apercevoir des baleines sont supérieures à tout autre endroit en Norvège.
Vers le milieu de l'hiver, les harengs migrateurs attirent les baleines à bosse, les orques et les rorquals communs au large des côtes de la Norvège du Nord. Pour les baleines, ces petits poissons présents en grand nombre constituent un festin copieux. Ces dernières années, ce phénomène s'est principalement produit dans la région de Lyngenfjord, Tromsø et Alta. Dernièrement, des baleines ont été aperçues à Kvænangen, où les chances d'observer des orques, des rorquals communs et des baleines à bosse sont grandes. Plusieurs voyagistes proposent des excursions d'observation des baleines dans cette région, notamment Brim Explorer, qui met un point d’honneur à perturber le moins possible les baleines et la nature grâce à ses bateaux hybrides silencieux.
Cependant, l'année prochaine, les harengs pourraient décider de migrer ailleurs, suivis par les baleines affamées…
Dans les îles du Svalbard, avec de la chance, on peut même apercevoir la plus grande baleine de la planète, la baleine bleue.
Une sortie d’observation des baleines, elle, vous permettra de voir de près une queue surgir de l’eau et de découvrir les fascinants cétacés dans leur habitat naturel. Sara Mesiti, biologiste et guide pour Whalesafari Andenes, espère que ces expériences sensibilisent le public à la vie marine et à la préservation des océans.
La meilleure destination du monde pour observer les baleines ?
Andenes, dans les Vesterålen, possède un avantage géographique qui la rapproche des baleines toute l'année. Les imposants cachalots se plaisent tout particulièrement dans une zone riche en nutriments, au nord-ouest d’Andenes, appelée Bleikdjupet (canyon de Bleik). Selon Sara, il n’y a pas d'autres endroits dans les pays nordiques, qui permettent d’atteindre très vite des profondeurs où les probabilités de voir des baleines sont aussi élevées.
La saison d’observation des baleines court généralement de mi-janvier à avril, et la saison d'été, de début mai à début novembre.
Si vous partez en mer avec Whalesafari Andenes, vous bénéficierez d’une entrée au fascinant musée des Cétacés, au sein du Centre des cétacés. Des sorties d’observation sont également organisées depuis Stø, sur la pointe de Langøya dans les Vesterålen. Depuis ce village, le trajet pour voir les baleines est un peu plus long, mais vous pourrez voir en prime quelques phoques se prélassant sur les rochers en bord de mer, ainsi que le reste de la colonie installée près du village de pêcheurs.
Une sortie d’observation des baleines n’est pas une simple sortie en mer : c’est un voyage époustouflant qui permet d'admirer les fjords et les paysages arctiques. Règles de sécurité
La Norvège prend ses responsabilités environnementales très au sérieux et tient à ce que des règles communes de protection des animaux et de l’environnement soient suivies lors de toute sortie nature.
N’oubliez pas que lorsque vous faites une sortie d’observation des baleines, vous vous invitez dans le territoire de ces dernières. Toute personne se rendant dans une zone susceptible d’être fréquentée par des baleines doit respecter les règles nationales encadrant l’observation des baleines. Ces directives s'appliquent à toutes les embarcations en mer et aussi bien au grand public qu'aux compagnies commerciales et autres.
Respectez une distance appropriée pour ne pas déranger ni stresser les cétacés. Vous ne devez en aucun cas essayer d'attirer une baleine ou de la toucher – que ce soit par de la nourriture, des sons ou l’utilisation de lumières clignotantes, etc.
Choisissez un prestataire qui assume ses responsabilités envers l’environnement marin et n’enfreint pas les règles. L’usage des drones à proximité des baleines est régi par des directives strictes.
Si vous suivez ces règles, vous passerez une journée en mer inoubliable, magique et en toute sécurité.
La grande attraction : les cachalots
L'équipage a entendu quelques clics émis par des baleines éloignées...
Quand le capitaine coiffe son casque pendant la navigation, c’est qu'il utilise son hydrophone, un appareil détectant et enregistrant les sons sous-marins pour repérer la présence de cachalots. On dit d’eux qu’ils sont les animaux les plus bruyants du monde et que leurs « clics » peuvent être entendus jusqu'à 3 ou 4 milles nautiques de distance.
Ce sont aussi des plongeurs hors pair, capables d’aller à plus de 2 000 mètres ! Ils peuvent rester sous la surface pendant une heure et demie. Quand ils nagent en surface, ils y restent en moyenne 8 minutes. On reconnaît également les cachalots aux jets d'air jaillissant de leurs évents, sur la gauche, à un angle de 45 degrés.
Le dernier signe de leur présence est le bout de leur queue (Vite ! C’est le moment de prendre une photo), juste avant qu’ils ne disparaissent dans les profondeurs océaniques.
Une fois la baleine disparue, il reste encore des tas d'animaux incroyables à observer.
7 conseils pour l’observation des baleines
• Habillez-vous chaudement, en mettant plusieurs couches de vêtement et des vêtements imperméables.
• Soyez prêt à prendre vos photos et utilisez un zoom pour de bonnes images !
• Détachez les yeux du viseur de temps en temps, pour admirer des vues spectaculaires que seule la Norvège du Nord peut offrir.
• Discutez avec l’équipage ! Il sera très heureux de partager ses connaissances au sujet des différentes espèces et de ce qu'il faut regarder.
• Faites preuve de patience ! Le capitaine et son équipage vous feront part de leurs prévisions quant aux endroits où les baleines sont susceptibles d'apparaître.
• Prenez un médicament contre les nausées une ou deux heures avant d’embarquer si vous craignez d’avoir le mal de mer.
• Prenez quelques snacks à grignoter : les snacks salés comme les crackers et les chips sont utiles en cas de nausée.
Faune sauvage des Vesterålen
Au cours de votre sortie d’observation des baleines, vous apercevrez très certainement d’autres représentants de la faune locale !
Les populations d’oiseaux, sur la côte d’Andøya, sont incroyables. Avez-vous déjà vu ces adorables petits oiseaux en chair et en os ? L’île de Bleiksøya est un sanctuaire ornithologique très animé. En été, elle abrite l'une des plus grandes colonies de macareux de Norvège ! L’île accueille également des petits pingouins, des guillemots à miroir et des cormorans.
