The lodge is staffed at Easter and in summer, has 85 bunks, a sauna, showers, homemade food and a cosy atmosphere. Out of season, Kalhovd has no-service lodgings in a cabin next to the main lodge. It has three two-bunk rooms, a fireplace, a kitchen and a privy, and is accessible using the DNT cabin key.
In summer, you can drive to the lodge. In high season, there's a bus service between Kalhovd and Rjukan. In winter, the road is closed at Steinsbøle about 17 km to the east. There's a staked route along the closed road. Transport to the lodge can be booked in periods when it is staffed.
Kalhovd lies on the east bank of the Kalhovd Fjord, at the eastern rim of the Hardanger Plateau and is a natural gateway to the plateau. In summer, there's a road to the lodge, which makes it a perfect starting point for cyclists who wish to combine cycling and hiking, as over toward Rjukan.
