Villa Fridheim

VILLA FRIDHEIM
Welcome to beautiful Krødsherad and Norway's only fairytale museum!

Villa Fridheim is a timber house built in the Swiss style, which was typical for country retreats around 1900. It is the tallest and best preserved building of its kind in Norway. The villa was built by timber merchant Svend Haug and his wife Thea, and was completed in 1892. Like a fairytale castle, Villa Fridheim sits on the island of Bjørøya in the middle of the Krøderfjorden lake, with the Norefjell mountains as backdrop.

The building was a guesthouse from 1912 until 1960, except during the war years 1940–1945. After the war, Villa Fridheim became a guesthouse once again, as well as a place of recuperation for sailors who had been in the merchant fleet during the war. The walls are full of history!

The guesthouse closed in 1960 and the villa was empty for 20 years. In 1980, Villa Fridheim was rescued from demolition, and reopened as a fairytale museum in 1986. The magnificent fairytale paintings form part of the museum's permanent exhibition and depict Norwegian and foreign fairytales. Every year, the museum exhibits the work of guest artists.

The museum has activities for children, a museum shop, cafe, canoe hire, a fairytale festival, concerts, jumble sales and a Christmas market. We welcome bookings for groups, functions and weddings.
