Myken is a small fishing community far from the mainland, due west of Svartisen glacier. The little archipelago contains 40 small islands, heather-covered islets and skerries. Today 15 people live here year round, in addition to the sheep and cows that graze there – but there is no car traffic. Myken invites you to experience its island scenery, the ever-changing sea, the silence and the midnight sun.
Just sit and absorb the view: the jagged peaks of the Lofoten islands, Svartisen glacier, Rødøy island, the Seven Sisters range, the islands of Lovund and Træna… Soon your mind will calm, allowing time for deeper contemplation and reflection. But when you’re ready, there is also plenty to experience on Myken.
Myken Distillery
Welcome to the world’s first Arctic whisky distillery. The owners will gladly give you a guided tour and then proudly pour you a taste of their products. During the peak of the summer season, tours are offered daily. Opening hours are posted on Facebook. Note the Norwegian spelling: Myken Destilleri.
Myken lighthouse
You will find this lighthouse as far west as you can go in Helgeland: where sky and sea meet. Myken lighthouse is the place to really face the ocean, and it offers an unbroken view in every compass direction. Visitors may spend the night, but there are only five guest rooms so be sure to sign up well in advance.
Fishing and birdlife
The waters surrounding Myken are teeming with fish! Since time immemorial fishing has provided a livelihood – and sometimes prosperity – for the islanders. You too can experience hauling a large cod from the depths and tugging it over the gunwale of the boat. While waiting to hook the next one, you can enjoy watching the varied sea birds.
Eat waffles at the Old Store, join a RIB sea-rafting safari with Myken Opplevelser, see an exhibition of works by local and nationally-known artists, and perhaps even enjoy a concert or two.
Please note: Accommodation is limited, so be sure to make advance reservations. For further information, please visit www.myken.no.
How to get to here
From Bodø and Sandnessjøen, take the express boat to Tonnes, and then transfer to the local Rødøyruta. The boat ride from Tonnes to Myken takes two hours.
If you are travelling from the town of Mo i Rana, you can drive or take the bus to Tonnes, and then the local Rødøy boat service. At Tonnes there is free parking.
