The Beech Tree Forest at Raet National Park

The most extensive and mature beech forest in Southern Norway.

Hasseltangen and Søm-Ruakerkilen form part of a moraine ridge - the region’s most prominent and distinct glacial deposit from the last Ice Age. The area boasts a beautiful and characteristic cultural landscape. Søm-Ruakerkilen Nature Reserve comprises the most extensive and mature beech forest in Southern Norway. The beech tree forest is especially magnificent during early spring, when the wood anemone bloom and form a blanket of white flowers around the tree trunks. High up in the tree tops songbirds perform the most beautiful spring concert - wood warbler, willow warbler and the blackcap are the most prominent of the bird choir.

You can find a map of the National Park here, or you can visit Grimstad Tourist Information and get a brochure.

You can also join a local ornithologist on a tour through the park. Information about booking here.

Enjoy!
