Nordvegen History Centre

Nordvegen History Centre is directly adjacent to St. Olav's Church at Avaldsnes. To uphold the integrity of the medieval church and the historical landscape, much of the Nordvegen History Centre is located underground. The glass and concrete facade are visible from Karmsundet strait, but from the churchyard, all that is visible is the round entrance, symbolising Mime's Well – the source of knowledge in Norse mythology. This can make the centre a little difficult to spot.

It was from here that they collected taxes from the ships that passed, kept an eye on the flow of goods from the Hardangerfjord and Boknafjord, and sent their own ships on Viking raids or trading missions across the North Sea.

History is told using modern techniques that stimulate the senses and enrich the overall visitor experience. Using sound, light, smells, images and film, Harald Fairhair takes us on a journey spanning 3,500 years of maritime history about Avaldsnes as a hub between Norway and Europe. The ‘Tilbakeblikk’ app allows you to take a guided tour of the Avaldsnes area using your mobile phone as a guide.

Audio guides are available in a number of languages

For international visitors, the centre offers audio guides in English, German, French and Spanish.

Facilities at Nordvegen History Centre

Nordvegen History Centre is universally designed, with a lift and toilets. There is also a souvenir shop at the centre. Nordvegen History Centre and St. Olav's Church have ample parking that is free of charge (except during the Viking festival).

Summer at Avaldsnes

A café is open at Nordvegen History Centre in summer. During the summer season, ‘real’ Vikings show what life was like during the Viking Age at the Viking farm.

Annual Viking Festival at Avaldsnes

The annual Viking Festival is held in June at Avaldsnes, attracting Viking enthusiasts from both Norway and abroad. The festival offers young and old a fascinating insight into the history of Avaldsnes.

How do I get to Nordvegen History Centre?

By car from Haugesund: follow the E134 road over the bridge to Karmøy, turn left at the second roundabout after the bridge, then follow the signs to Nordvegen Historiesenter.

By bus from Haugesund: Buses 208, 209 and 210 stop at Avaldsnes. It takes about 20–30 minutes to walk to Nordvegen History Centre from the Avaldsnes bus stop.

Nordvegen History Centre as a venue

Nordvegen History Centre is an excellent place to celebrate life’s big occasions, for meetings or other events. The centre has capacity for up to 80 guests.
