This is a new Mjølkevegen Northern route that corresponds with the Valdresekspressen bus NW161 from Oslo. You can take the bus all the way to the starting point, Lemonsjø Fjellstue. For time schedule summer mountain routes, visit: https://www.nor-way.no/en/routes/valdresekspressen/
For bicycle rental (el- or hybrid), we recommend contacting Beitostølen Rental www.beitostolenrental.com or hello@beitostolenrental.no / Tel: (+47) 400 02 115. You can arrange for them to transport the bicycles to Lemonsjø or that they are delivered to the bus when your bus arrives at Beitostølen. You can also rent e-bikes from Hike & Bike at Lemonsjøen Fjellstue.
After a nice stop at Lemonsjø Fjellstue, you are ready to start cycling! The first leg passes through Murudalen towards Slangen and along Lake Olstappen to Ruten Fjellstue in Espedalen. This leg has not yet been signposted (2019), so make sure that you are well prepared and bring a map and tour description. It’s approx. 60 km between Lemonsjø and Ruten. The friendly hosts at Ruten will welcome you upon your arrival. Enjoy the cosy atmosphere, explore the outdoor activities, and visit the Moose Observation Tower. Ruten has its own mini brewery and brews different types of beer for their guests.
From Ruten Fjellstue, the next leg will take you to Bygdin, along the idyllic Jotunheimvegen. We recommend a stop at Haugseter Fjellstue for a break, a nice meal and accommodation. Haugseter is well known for its many nearby hiking- and fishing possibilities. Between Ruten and Haugseter it is 46 km. The next stretch to Bygdin is another 14 km.
At Bygdin you'll find Bygdin Høyfjellshotell and the pier where the historical boat route M/B Bitihorn will take you across the lake to Eidsbugarden. For timetable prices and online booking: https://jvb.no/en/bitihorn/ (remember to book for yourself and your bicycle!). The boat trip to Eidsbugarden takes 1 hr 45 min. In the area around Bygdin there are also numerous hiking possibilities and the popular Synshorn via Ferrata. Bygdin Høyfjellshotell has comfortable accommodation and nice meals in a friendly and traditional atmosphere.
Upon arrival at Eidsbugarden, there are only a few kilometers to Tyinholmen Høyfjellstue. This is one of the most historical tourist lodges in Jotunheimen with a continuous operation since 1892. Enjoy the breathtaking surroundings and access to many 2000-meter peaks nearby. Vi recommend a small cycling detour to the beautifull valley of Koldedalen (signposted from Tyinholmen).
From Tyinholmen, you cycle along the Lake Tyin and continue to Tyinkrysset. At Tyinkrysset there is a sports shop with tourist information, a grocery store, restaurants and accommodation. From Tyinkrysset, we recommend following the King’s Road to Øye (instead of the E16) and from Øye, make sure you get on the Northern side of Vangsmjøsa (lake) on Vennisvegen road. (And not on the E16 towards Vang centre). Continue on Vennisvegen and Lilagardsvegen (slight uphill climb) until you reach the Slettefjell toll booth/entrance to the Slettefjell mountain road.
Get ready for the toughest stretch on the entire route. You cycle on Slettefjellvegen accross the Slettefjellet mountain with a top point at 1315 m.a.s.l. On the way up, we recommend a stop for a short hike to see the Sputrefossen waterfall. Once you arrive at the top, the spectacular view will hopefully cover for the strenuous uphill ride. From there it’s all downhill and a comfortable ride towards Lykkja and Beito. From Beito to Beitostølen there is another 3 km climb to your final destination Beitostølen. Between Tyinkrysset and Beitostølen, there are approx. 55 km.
Turn left at the intersection and you’ll see our recommended accommodation, Radisson BLU Mountain Resort. They can provide a comfortable bed, great food, spa-treatments and a 25 m swimming pool. At Beitostølen you’ll also find a large number of shops, restaurants, pubs, activity providers and all types of accommodation.
If you have a rental bike, it should be returned to the Intersport store, or talk to the hotel reception if the rental store is closed upon your arrival.
