Northern Norway Troms og Finnmark TROMSØ

Midnight sun walk to the Cable Car

  •  /  km From You
Overview

Join us on a fantastic walk to see the midnight sun from a unique perspective: From the mountain plateau by the Cable Car, with panoramic views of Tromsø town and the "Ersfjord traverse" in the background.

On this tour we’ll visit the Cable Car like the locals do: A fresh walk up the Sherpa Steps, and a pleasant journey down with the Cable Car gondola. As a part of our work to become a more environmentally friendly company, our guide will take you across the Tromsø Bridge with the public bus.

The walk starts on a hiking trail, before we embark on the approximately 1300 stone steps. The guide takes you up the mountain. Through birch forest and past the tree line. You'll have regular breaks to enjoy the view which reveals it self step by step, while the guide eagerly tells about Tromsø and the area you are hiking in.

The excursion ends 410 m above sea level on the mountain plateau at Fjellheisen. If the weather gods are with us we’ll get to enjoy a panoramic view of the city and mountains bathing in the yellow and red colors of the midnight. If the midnight sun gleams with its absence, we still get a nice view and extra time to enjoy a delicious cup of coffee and waffle. The trip ends comfortably, returning with the gondola and bus back to the city center.

The Cable Car is one of Tromsø municipality’s most popular tourist destinations, and a fantastic perspective to see Tromsø from. The staircase is built by Sherpas from Nepal – specializing in building stairs and paths in mountain areas. The Sherpa steps in Tromsø is one of the longest of this type in Norway.

The walk up the Sherpa steps is suitable for everyone. The steps make the terrain easy to walk in, and you find several break. In one year, over 100 000 people walked up or down the Sherpa stairs in Tromsø, so this is really an attraction one should visit when spending time in Tromsø.
