This tour is conducted by Tromsø Villmarkssenter. Take an Arctic time-out under the Midnight Sun. The Arctic summer nights are basked in golden sunlight and filled with a unique peace and tranquility.
The tour is upon request for a group of minimum 6 participants. Please contact us for booking.
For Norwegians it is tradition to gather their families and friends around a big bonfire; relaxing, telling stories and working on a midnight-suntan. A treat after the long, dark winter. Join us for an overnight stay in our campsite and celebrate summer like a local.
After arrival we go out for a nature walk to work up an appetite for the bonfire grilling. We will talk about the local flora, traditional use of plants and look for wildlife. Around our center you might spot moose, reindeer and lots of Arctic birds – so keep your fingers crossed. Back at the campsite we build a bonfire, grill sausage and marshmallows; outside if the weather is good and inside our cozy Gamme-hut if it rains. Your guide will entertain you with stories about our life with the dogs and you can watch a movie about our participation in Europe’s longest dog sled race, the Finnmarksløpet. Of course you can also visit our dog yard, cuddle our 300 Alaskan Huskies to your hearts content, say hello to our puppies and take pictures. Stay awake as long as you like. The night is spent on reindeer furs in a shared cabin. It is lightproof, for restful sleep under the Midnight Sun.
The next morning starts bright and early with a kayak tour along the beautiful coast of Håkøya-Island. The area is close to several sea bird sanctuaries, so we often see Arctic terns, cormorants and even sea Eagles. The absence of motor noises also allows for seal and porpoise encounters.
By default, we provide sturdy double kayaks, but you can request single kayaks if you already have some experience. Please let us know during booking! A home-made, cold lunch with a sandwich, chocolate cake and hot drinks puts the finishing touches on your adventure, before we bring you back to Tromsø.
