Linnekleppen Aremark/Rakkestad

Linnekleppen is a popular excursion spot. Fire Watchtower and the highest point in Rakkestad and Marker.

Linnekleppen is the highest point in Rakkestad municipality and Marker municipality. It is located just on the border between the municipalities. At the bottom of the tower it's 325 meters above sea level and the tower rises 17 meters above this level.

Linnekleppen is Northern Europe's only operated fire watch tower. The tower overlooks large forest areas southeast of Norway, as well as parts of Sweden. It was established in 1908, the tower is manned in June, July and August. A larger tower was built in 1936. The tower is 17 meters high and has a small room for the firewatcher. On clear days you can see all the way to the Gaustatoppen from Linnekleppen.

The Linnekleppen is not only a forest fire watch tower but a favorite place of departure for people both from Norway and abroad, and not least an important cultural-historical memorial. We estimate that 2 - 3 thousand people visit the Linnekleppen in the summer season. You come here via a blue-marked path from highway 124.

It is just under 4 km to walk up to the tower from the parking lot, with a steady climb all the way.
It's a great trip for both kids and adults. If you are lucky you can also get up in the tower when this is manned.
