In the furthest reaches of northern Øygarden is Hernar. The island is home to about 15 inhabitants, and is a favourite destination for holiday-makers. Visiting Hernar requires a boat, either your own, or the small passenger boat that runs from Hellesøy. On Hernar you can see the place where the Viking king St. Olav held council in the 10th century. Hernar is one of the most secluded places on earth. It is tucked away from the tiring pressures of modern life, allowing its visitors to peacefully discover its stunning nature, as well as themselves. Along its coastline, sea houses stand in close formation, with boats waiting to take passengers on their way, whilst houses stand hidden behind rocks and cliffs, protected from the sea’s elements. If you want to experience countryside at its most beautiful and wild, set sail to the island where "no one believed that anyone could live", and experience the rugged and timeless island of Hernar.
