Welcome to Hardraade!
Discover the fascinating story behind the building of the Viking ship moored at Sundvolden in Hole Municipality, just across from Sundvolden Hotel.
Dronning Åsta was launched on Steinsfjorden on August 30, 2025. The ship now lies at the pier in Vintervika, only a short walk from the shipyard. As you explore the site and the ship, you’ll encounter legendary figures such as Harald Hardråde and Odin, along with Odin’s mysterious ravens, Hugin and Munin. You can also step inside the rune hut, the Viking shop, and the blacksmith’s forge.
Watch craftspeople at work—smithing, carving runes, sewing, chopping, and woodworking—all while walking through living Norwegian Viking history. Our volunteers will guide you and share stories about this remarkable project. The “Vikings” are always happy to chat—there’s always life and activity here!
Admission is free, but donations or a visit to our Viking shop are greatly appreciated. Every contribution helps!
Opening hours

ABOUT Hardraae Viking Ship Association:
Bringing the past to life
Join us on a journey back in time, to an age when Vikings ruled the fjords.
The Viking ship Dronning Åsta is a hybrid replica of the Klåstad Ship, built using traditional craftsmanship. Countless oak logs have been split, 4,000 iron rivets forged, and 100 m² of sail handwoven. With the dedication of more than 100 volunteers, over 120,000 hours of work, and eight years of effort, we finally launched the 20-meter-long Viking ship Dronning Åsta on Steinsfjorden in Hole Municipality.
Harald Hardraade and Queen Åsta
The name Hardraade comes from the legendary Viking king Harald Hardråde (1015–1066), who grew up at Stein Farm by Steinsfjorden in Hole. He was the half-brother of Saint Olav, and their mother was Queen Åsta. What could be more fitting than naming the Hardraade ship Dronning Åsta—“Queen Åsta”?
