Go Rafting Sjoa offers rafting and other activities in, on and around the River Sjoa. Our base for rafting is right next to the Sjoa, which is regarded as one of the world’s best rafting rivers.
From May to October the area around the River Sjoa and Heidal is teeming with visitors who have come to raft, kayak, swim or riverboard down the river. Rafting the River Sjoa is our main activity, but we also offer rafting in other rivers, family rafting trips, canyoning, riverboarding, abseiling, climbing and many other exciting activities.
Short rafting trip on the River Sjoa
This trip gives a taste of what rafting is all about and always leaving rafters hungry for more! We raft on the same stretch of river as the day trip, a section that includes many of the river’s well-known rapids. This is normally an afternoon trip and ends with coffee and cake back at our base.
Season: 1 May 1 – 1 October
Age limit: Must be at least 15 years old on the year of participation
Duration: About 3 hours
Day trip on the river Sjoa
This is the trip that made the River Sjoa a world-renowned rafting river. It’s our most popular rafting adventure and is suitable for everyone. We first paddle through calm waters with wonderful views over picturesque Heidal. Downstream we’ll pass through narrow gorges and classic rapids such as “The Gulf Stream”, “Haystacks”, “Bye Bye Baby”, “The Faukstad Drop” and many others. We raft about 14 km and after the trip enjoy a delicious hot lunch served at our base.
Season: 1 May – 1 October
Age limit: Must be at least 15 years old on the year of participation
Duration: About 5 hours
Rafting the Åseng Gorge
This is more challenging than the regular day trip and delivers maximum enjoyment for adventurous rafters. We start at the top of the gorge and paddle through 16 km of foaming white-waters. Åseng Gorge is known for its extreme and wild nature and sheer cliffs, guaranteed to get the adrenaline pumping. A hot lunch is served back at our base after of the trip. This tour is offered either as the second day in a weekend rafting package, or for visitors who have previously rafted with us on the River Sjoa through Heidal.
Season: 1 May – 1 October
Age limit: 18+ with previous rafting experience
Duration: About 5 hours
The Sjoa Double
This is Norway’s longest day rafting trip! Overall, we raft about 33 km, from above Åseng Gorge to a few kilometres from where the River Sjoa flows into the River Lågen. For the first half of the trip we paddle through a beautiful and normally inaccessible wild gorge, before cooking up some coffee over a camp fire and having lunch. Feeling fully energised after lunch, we set out again on a stretch of river that’s quite different from the gorge and find new places for fun and games around every bend. After this trip a shower and sauna have never felt so good!
Season: 1 May – 1 October
Age limit: 18+
Duration: About 7 hours
Fifty / Fifty
A great combination of rafting and riverboarding for those with plenty of energy but not much time! We start with a regular rafting day trip and after lunch we launch onto the river again, but this time on riverboards. After practising riverboarding in calmer waters, we drive upstream, then riverboard back down the river. Playing, surfing and swimming through the waves in the river’s own natural playgrounds are all part of the riverboarding adventure, which ends at our base. After a well-deserved shower and sauna, the day ends with coffee / tea and cake.
Season: 1 May – 1 October
Age limit: Must be at least 15 years old on the year of participation
Duration: 7-8 hours
Family Rafting
Close to the River Sjoa are the rivers Otta and Lågen, both of which are excellent for families, school groups and those wanting a gentler rafting experience. Both rivers are quite different from the Sjoa yet offer rafting adventures through some of the biggest waves in the Gudbrandsdal valley! The rivers are wide and deep with alternating calm waters and rapids. Your guide can use the river’s breadth to either head straight into the large waves, or navigate through calmer waters. The trip includes plenty of time for playing, bathing and swimming, and ends back at base with coffee, juice and cake.
Season: 1 May – 1 October
Age limit: Must be at least 7 years old on the year of participation
Duration: About 4 hours
Riverboarding
You might think you can swim, but wait until you try riverboarding! We start by practising riverboarding techniques in calm waters, before embarking on a trip downstream. We’ll stop to play along the way, enjoying all the fun the river has to offer. You can’t get a closer encounter with the river! After the trip a hot lunch is served back at our base. We provide the riverboard, full wetsuit, flippers, swimming gloves, helmet and life jacket.
Season: 1 May – 1 October
Age limit: Must be at least 15 years old on the year of participation
Duration: About 5 hours
Canyoning
Canyoning originated in the Alps, and Gudbrandsdal valley has many gorges that are perfect for this exciting activity. Canyoning is a mixture of clambering and climbing, swimming, leaping into deep pools, exploring waterfalls and generally traversing the small river that runs through a narrow gorge, using ropes to get us past the most difficult sections. The trip is fairly challenging, but suitable for anyone with normal physical health and strength. Canyoning is one of our most popular day-two activities as part of a weekend package.
Season: 10 May – 1 October
Age limit: Must be at least 15 years old on the year of participation
Duration: about 5 hours
Bridgeswing
Imagine standing on the edge of a bridge, ready to jump, with your friends gathered around as eager spectators…
We organise bridgeswinging on a bridge that’s a short walk from our base. Bridgeswinging is guaranteed to get your adrenaline pumping! It’s about 17 meters down to the water and you’re fitted with a harness and a couple of ropes. Some adventurers change their minds at the last second, even though this is our safest activity. Bridgeswinging is ideal as an after-rafting activity, for overnight guests or in conjunction with one of our weekend packages.
Season: All year
Age limit: Must be at least 12 years old on the year of participation
Duration: It depends on how long you wait before you dare to jump…
Caving
A challenging and unique experience that appeals to any explorers that are not claustrophobic. The cave we explore is narrow, but caving is suitable for anyone with normal physical and mental health. You’ll be crawling, creeping and clambering into an underground world. On the way to the caves we pass the magnificent waterfalls in Ula with views into the stunning Rondane mountain range. We park the car at Mysuseter and it’s about a 45-minute moderate walk to the opening of the cave. Exploring the cave takes about 45 minutes, equipped with a helmet and headlamp. Caving is a popular activity as part of a weekend package combined with rafting.
Normal Season: 1 May – 1 October
Age limit: Must be at least 12 years old on the year of participation
Duration: About 5 hours
