Skjernøya, home to Norway’s southernmost settlement, is located in the archipelago outside Mandal and is connected to the mainland by a bridge. A bike trip from Mandal town centre to Skjernøy and around the island is about 22 km round trip, and is suitable for most people – including children.
The tour starts at Tidemands Bridge and continues east from Mandal centre, along Sandskargata and then onto Søren Jaabæks vei towards Kristiansand. Then follow Tregdeveien out towards the sea and turn right towards Skjernøy. At the bottom of the hill after the bridge, turn right towards Skjernøysund – this is where the old road to Dyrstad begins. Be sure to take a short hike up to Grottevarden to enjoy the great view. From Dyrstad, follow the road back to the intersection at Farestad.
Park your bike and consider taking the hike that starts at the suspension bridge. The area is well marked and signposted, and the full walk takes about 2 hours – though there are many shorter or longer detours if you prefer. Along the way, you'll find information boards about settlements from the Stone Age and Migration Period, as well as historical facts about fishing in the old days.
