Eskedalshelleren, Eksedalsbalkongen og Eskedalstjønna - Great viewpoints.

From the viewpoint, you look out over Birkeland. The Tovdalselva winds through the landscape before opening into Flakksvann. You can see Berse and several of the surrounding peaks near the town centre. To the east lies Håbsåsen, while further south you can spot Morhommer and Skaftåsen. Reaching the summit requires some strength and confidence, as the path to the post box is steep and secured with ropes. Alternatively, you can approach from the other side via the trail towards Flakke loner.

Trail description

Stupstien is a narrow, steep and partly exposed trail. The most exposed sections are secured with ropes. The trail follows the rock face up to the viewpoint and is marked from the road junction at Teinefossen for those seeking a more adventurous route. It is also possible to follow the trail part of the way, then turn right and continue across the plateau, offering excellent views along the entire stretch.

Alternative route: The summit can also be reached from Nyhus, slightly further south along the road towards Flakk. For a longer hike, a marked trail leads west from Eskedalshelleren to the trail network at Flakke loner. From there, you can either continue towards Eikhola and Homslia, or return to Birkeland via Flakkefossen.

Local history: Stupstien passes through a well known climbing area. Eskedalshelleren is a large rock shelter where you can stay dry in rainy weather, and a designated fire pit is available.

Access: From Birkeland, drive north towards Herefoss and turn left just after the Uldal factories. Follow the road towards Mosfjell and cross Teinefoss Bridge. From the first junction after the bridge, a marked trail leads to the summit. Alternatively, continue about 400 metres south along Flakkeveien to Nyhus.
