A 5.7-kilometre round trip to Storvatnet in Midt-Smøla Nature Reserve, through bog and heathland protected since 2009, with just 10 metres of ascent.
Storvatnet lies within the Midt-Smøla Nature Reserve. The reserve is part of the bog and heathland areas on Smøla, and was protected in the spring of 2009. While many hikes in the region climb steeply into the mountains, this one offers something different: open, moor-like scenery with just 10 metres of total ascent. The route to the trail post by the lake is 2.85 kilometres one way (5.7 kilometres there and back), and you should normally allow around one hour and 20 minutes on the way in.
The surface is a mix of firm gravel and bog, with duckboards and planks laid across much of the route, though boots are still recommended. The route is both signed and marked, and there's mobile coverage in the area. The flat terrain makes the hike accessible to most people, regardless of fitness level, though part of the path runs right along the water's edge, and the ground can be wet in places. If there's been heavy rain, expect even wetter conditions.
The bog and heathland is an important habitat for birds, which is exactly why the reserve was established. Here you can enjoy rich birdlife as you walk, in scenery quite different from the fjords and mountain peaks found elsewhere in the region.
Storvatnet was once the source of drinking water for much of Smøla, and the old pumping station stands where the path begins. You'll find the path to the trail post on the left-hand side of the lake. It's fairly clear the whole way, since many recreational anglers use the same path. If you bring a fishing rod, you might just get a bite in the lake you're walking alongside.
Getting there
The hike starts some way into Smøla. From the junction at Nelvika, you drive for a couple of minutes before turning off at a signposted radio mast and following the gravel road down to the old pumping station. You can park here, or already at the sign up by the main road.
If you travel to Smøla by express boat or ferry to Edøya, you can also cycle to Storvatnet. Gurisenteret by the quay at Edøya rents out bikes, bike trailers and child seats. Note that regular buses don't run all the way to the starting point.
