Gjevilvasshytta – A Historic Gem at the Gateway to Trollheimen
At the end of the road and the edge of the mountains, by the crystal-clear waters of Gjevilvatnet, lies Gjevilvasshytta – one of Norway’s oldest and most beautiful tourist cabins. Voted the finest DNT cabin in the country in 2020, it offers a unique mix of rich history, traditional charm, and spectacular nature.
Accommodation
Gjevilvasshytta offers 64 beds, divided between a staffed and an unstaffed section. The main building dates back to 1819, with timber from as early as 1739. In the staffed season, guests enjoy electricity, showers, sauna, and homemade meals in historic surroundings. During off-season, the unstaffed part is available with DNT key access and basic facilities.
The cabin welcomes hikers, families, school groups, and larger parties – with options for booking in both high and low season.
Activities
This is the perfect base for exploring Trollheimen. From here, you can reach iconic peaks such as Blåhø and Gjevilvasskamban or embark on the classic "Trekanten" (Triangle hike) – a three-day circuit connecting Jøldalshytta and Trollheimshytta.
In summer, the sandy mountain beach Rauøra is a short walk away, offering a rare chance to swim and relax in a pristine alpine setting – perfect for families with children.
All-Year Destination
Gjevilvasshytta is accessible by car during the summer. The road is ploughed in winter but closed to public car traffic. Groomed ski tracks are prepared from both Osen and Grøtsetra all the way to the cabin (8 km), making it an excellent destination for winter trips. The area is snow-reliable and ideal for cross-country skiing, ski touring, and snowshoeing.
Pet-Friendly
A separate dog room is available, so your four-legged companion is welcome to join your mountain adventure.
