Rogaland Nafo – One-day seminar on self-care
5 novembre 09:00-15:00
Søren J. Skår opens the day with a presentation on how emotions are linked to other behaviours, particularly self-talk and thoughts. Emotional responses can be triggered by language itself, and what we think and say to ourselves can trigger and maintain distress in much the same way as external situations. The presentation explores how the principles of exposure can also be applied to our own thoughts and feelings, and how our self-talk can either keep us trapped in avoidance and rumination or help us cope with difficult experiences. This provides a starting point for self-care and a bridge to the day’s main theme.
Jon A. Løkke then explores self-care as an umbrella term for essential life skills. These skills can be learned, but need to be practised until they become habitual. Broadly speaking, they include emotion regulation, perspective-taking (thinking about our own thinking) and problem-solving. The presentation provides an overview of six processes and skills that are important for self-care, and includes an exercise in analysing our own self-care. The processes, analyses and interventions have been used in conversational behaviour analysis since the 1990s and are supported by a substantial body of research.
Lunch will be provided.
