For the inhabitants of Sotra’s coastline, fishing was their livelihood. In the 1870s, a herring and mackerel saltery was built on Langøy. The Langøy saltery attracted many merchants and fishermen, and new businesses sprung-up to serve the workers, including accommodation, a tavern, a bakery, post office and a store. On Langøy, businesses were thriving for over a hundred years, with open doors from the first customer in the morning until the last one left in the evening. As the sound of oars from the last customer’s boat faded into the night, the tobacco smoke was aired-out, the buckets of chewing tobacco emptied and the floor and counter washed, ready for the next day. You can really sense the historic atmosphere at Langøy wharf, particularly when people come from far and wide to the annual market at the coast-culture centre.
